The Campus Y Hub for Social Justice at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is hiring a Communications Graduate Coordinator Position. The Communications Graduate Coordinator will aid in the execution of communications strategies for the Campus Y, working with staff members and students to ensure the mission, stories, and opportunities of the Campus Y are shared with internal and external stakeholders. For more information, and to apply for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to Yalitza Ramos (ramos@email.unc.edu).


Responsibilities Include:

Outreach & Communications: (70%)

  • Content Curation
    • Lead and produce creative and engaging story, photo/video, and audio features with Campus Y students, staff, and alumni.
    • Lead, produce, and create content about the Y through storytelling, such as
      • Storytelling based on current Campus Y events and programming;
      • Interviews with students and staff, and alumni.
      • Photography and/or videography
      • Opportunity to continue producing the Campus Y podcast, Social Justice Stories 
    • Collect and disseminate information, events, resources, and stories for the Campus Y Weekly newsletter geared toward the campus community.
    • Collect and disseminate stories, highlights, and important updates for the Friends of the Campus Y Quarterly newsletter, geared towards donors and Campus Y alum.
    • Film and photograph current events taking place at the Campus Y
  • General Communications Support
    • Review and provide feedback regarding all department copy, layouts and proofs prior to presentations or printing.
    • Create graphics and content for our social media & lobby screen
    • Update simple website content and information.
    • Create and manage a centralized calendar for all Campus Y events, programs, and committees
    • Develop internal and external communications resources for students and professional staff.
    • Serve as a liaison on behalf of the Campus Y for Student Affairs Communications/ Website IT, and University Communications.
    • Collaborate with members of Campus Y Student Communications team on long-term projects.
    • Work with Campus Y staff members to develop communications strategies for programs and internal initiatives.
    • Support Campus Y Leadership in creating an Annual Report/Look Book.
    • Potentially work with archival research in the UNC archives to find relevant images, video, and information about historical Campus Y projects.

Development and Campaign Support: (20%)

  • Produce four Campus Y Quarterly newsletters geared towards donors and Campus Y alum.
  • Increase alumni engagement through alumni spotlights and database management.
  • Lead Brick Campaign and support Student Affairs appeals through social media, email/Mailchimp, and coordinating staff/student-led Town Halls.
  • Lead the End of Year Giving Appeal.
  • Support the Director in donor stewardship.

Student Support (10%)

  • Meet with Campus Y executive team/communication project leads to advise on communication strategies and best practices.
  • Support student leadership in updating website information, compiling weekly newsletter content, submitting Heel Life events, and collecting committee information (e.g. events, attendance tracking).

Qualifications:

  • A graduate student at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • Experience organizing and managing multiple tasks with changing deadlines and priorities
  • Demonstrated experience managing and tracking projects independently
  • Understands concepts of diversity and inclusion and how they impact marketing and communications
  • Demonstrated personal qualities: sound decision making, creativity, organization, time management, diplomacy and integrity
  • Evidence of drive and initiative as demonstrated by personal experiences and previous employment (must be a self-starter)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience posting to professional social media environments, Adobe Creative Cloud products, WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva and photography is a plus
  • Preferred programs of study: communications, journalism, English, business or other related fields

Terms of Employment:

Period of Employment

  • August 15th through May 31st
    • End of period may change based on student status (i.e. cannot work past graduation)
  • Option for June employment contingent upon supervisor and director approval

Time Commitment

  • Up to 20 hours per week. Schedule and hours to be determined, and documented with supervisor.
  • It is expected that Graduate Coordinators maintain office hours with flexibility allowed for occasional weekend and evening programs.
  • Graduate Coordinators, with supervisor approval, can work more hours per week to provide flexibility to take time off during the following student breaks; fall, winter, and spring.
  • Graduate Coordinators, with supervisor approval, can work less hours per week in order to support academic requirements.

Remuneration

  • $16/hour
  • Bi-Weekly Pay Schedule
