Program Overview 

Dialogue for Change (DfC) is a weekend intensive professional development program that takes participants through a concise Intergroup Dialogue (IGD) experience and provides them with concrete skills to create meaningful change in their communities. Participants will learn more about the tenets of IGD, engage in self-reflection, and develop their identity as a change-agent through interactive exercises.   

The UODI will offer two retreat opportunities, one for Carolina faculty & staff and the other for graduate & professional students.  

Applicant Profile 

Interested in participants with various levels of dialogue experience, who are passionate about self-reflection, community-building, and engaging in productive conflict. Seeking a diverse cohort with representation across social identities including, but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, (dis)ability status, nationality, geographic origin, language use, first generation, veteran/military, and political ideology.  

Responsibilities & Commitments 

Participants will be expected to attend both Friday & Saturday sessions from 9:00AM-5:00PM, with an optional 8:30AM breakfast. Lunch will be provided.

Learning Goals

  • Develop greater self-awareness about one’s personal relationship to social identity and communication and conflict styles 
  • Explore allyship and how to be a more supportive ally in the workplace and classroom  
  • Understand approaches for creating a more open and inclusive classroom environment, including psychological safety  
  • Review pedological approaches to dialogue, including intergroup dialogue 
  • Garner tools to help address challenging situations in the workplace and/or classroom setting including microaggressions and incidents of bias  
  • Create an action plan for continued learning after the retreat  
Learning Goals

  • Garner tools to help address challenging situations in the professional and academic worlds including microaggressions and incidents of bias 
  • Enhance group dynamics and foster the development of a peer cohort comprised of social justice advocates.
