Members of the Carolina Community,

I am writing to express support for a crucial resolution that was passed by the Graduate and Professional Senate this week. This resolution reflects our commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for all graduate students. You can read the entirety of the resolution on the GPSG Heel Life page.

GPS Senate Resolution 55-036 calls for UNC Chapel Hill to take multiple actions, including to “adopt a policy of non-compliance with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and any other law enforcement agency acting in an immigration enforcement capacity.” The decision to prioritize voluntary compliance with law enforcement agencies acting in an immigration enforcement capacity over protecting students instills fear and confusion, undermines the university’s learning environment, and erodes trust between the university and its students. To be clear, we are not requesting the university to act against any lawful court ordered actions. Instead, we advocate that the university adopt clear policies that protect students’ rights and prioritize their safety and clearly communicate those policies with students.

For the remainder of my term, I am committed to disseminating resources and information to all students. My administration plans to work with the university to develop a series of resources to ensure that students are well-informed about university policies and their rights as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself and my team with any questions.
