  • Medical Services: Offered as part of student fees or university-offered insurance plan. CHS offers full medical services including women’s health, immunizations (including free flu shots), HIV testing and other STD testing, and international travel clinic.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services: CAPS staff is strongly committed to addressing the mental health needs of a diverse student body through timely access to consultation and connection to clinically appropriate services. More information about CAPS and services available to students can be found here.
  • Campus Health Pharmacy: Full pharmacy open Monday-Friday with an online refill process. Students who are enrolled in the UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan may be able to obtain prescription medications at Campus Health for a lower price than at off-campus pharmacies.
  • Campus Health Services Healthy Heels Portal: Secure electronic portal for making appointments, messaging with campus providers, online nurse advice and checking the results of clinical tests.

Student Health Insurance

  • Most eligible students enrolled in the UNC System Colleges and Universities, including UNC-Chapel Hill, are required to have health insurance coverage.
  • Students who are required to have health insurance coverage must either demonstrate proof of active creditable health insurance (on an annual basis), or may choose to enroll in the UNC System Student Health Insurance Plan administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC. More information about this requirement and the Student Health Insurance Plan can be found here.
  • Graduate students who receive stipends for research or teaching are considered Research or Teaching assistants (RA/TA). Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC also offers a plan for RAs, TAs, and Fellows, which some departments pay for and includes most preventive care and office visits.
  • Spousal/family coverage is available at an additional cost.

Dental Insurance

  • The UNC System and UNC-Chapel Hill “intentionally do not offer or endorse a dental insurance plan.” After a thorough evaluation of options, it has been determined that neither development nor endorsement of a University-sponsored plan provides premium or coverage advantages beyond what students can secure on their own.
  • Students who do not have dental insurance, but are interested in obtaining coverage, may consider purchasing coverage from one of the following major dental providers:
    • Aetna
    • Ameritas
    • Blue Cross and Blue Shield
    • Cigna
    • Humana
  • These websites offer you the ability to compare plans:
    • eHealth
    • DentalPlans.com
    • Dentalinsurance.com

What else should I know to save money?

  • Be cost conscious.
  • Always visit the Campus Health Services instead of an emergency room or off-campus urgent care facility for non-emergency situations.
  • Consider purchasing generic prescription medications, rather than brand name, to save money.
  • When CHS is closed, going to an urgent care facility can also be less expensive than an emergency room. Familiarize yourself with nearby urgent cares and hours of operation.
